Learning Goals: I will be able to solve problems by creating equal groups and begin to learn how to multiply and divide. I will learn that repeated addition is the same as multiplying. I need equal groups to multiply.
Before:
1. Look at the cover of the book - What do you think might happen?
2. While we read the story use the manipulatives to help you create the equal groups that we need to solve the chidren and Ma's problem. From these discoveries you will be prepared to work with a partner to complete your own "Real World" math problem solving.
3. Don't forget our work with mental math and how these strategies might help us when creating/dividing to make equal groups. Pictures, Numbers, Words will help to show how you problem solved. In this story Ma and the children were faced with some real world math problems... What were they? Our connection to a real world problem:
Step 2:
1. Watch Mr. D: After discussing the book, watch as I demonstrate the use of manipulatives to help solve "real world" math challenges.
2. Check for understanding:
During: - Practice/Problem Solving
1. Work with a partner to solve these "Real World" math problems. Remember - you are creating equal groups.
As you solve your problems you will need to show and save your work so that others can see how you solved your problems - You'll soon be the expert!
After:
Gallery Walk - use your groups chart paper to help you be the expert. As others come to visit your group you will show them, with your pictures, numbers, manipulatives and words how you solved the problems. What equal groups did you create?
